Meet the Innkeepers
The Carrier Houses Bed & Breakfast had long been the dream of Innkeepers Dan and Lynn Hegeman. Dan grew up in Long Island and after a rewarding career in the airline industry was ready for a change. Lynn comes from West Virginia and has always had a special place in her heart for the mountains. Her knowledge of marketing and experience in hotel and restaurant management led to a desire to own and operate a bed and breakfast. Dan quickly embraced the idea.
With nothing more than an escape to the North Carolina mountains on their minds the Hegemans set out for Asheville from Charlotte. They decided to take in the local scenery and left the main road headed north on Highway 221. It only took a few miles of driving to confirm that they had made the right choice. Absorbed in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills, Dan and Lynn realized they felt more relaxed than they had in years. Coming over a rise in the road they entered Rutherfordton and immediately were impressed by the quaint little town. They passed a charming bed and breakfast called the Carrier Houses, but did not have time to stop.
Rutherfordton and the bed and breakfast remained on Dan and Lynn's minds for quite some time after their trip. They returned to Rutherfordton five months later and stayed two nights at the Carrier Houses. Dan and Lynn spent those three days exploring Rutherfordton and Rutherford county. The warmth of the people, comfortable climate, restaurants, history and scenery made such an impression on them that they made a return trip a few months later. One thing led to another and Dan and Lynn found themselves talking to the owners about purchasing the bed and breakfast. The Hegemans became the proprietors of the Carrier Houses Bed and Breakfast on January 25, 1999.
Since arriving in Rutherfordton, Dan and Lynn have become active members of the community. Rutherfordton is one of the oldest towns in western North Carolina. The main street district is on the National Register of Historical Places and so are many of the buildings and homes in the area including the Carrier Houses. Several years ago Dan and Lynn dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Carrier for a walking tour of historical Rutherfordton. They are a great resource for information on the area.
