This weekend is the 7th annual Dirty Dancing Festival will take place at Lake Lure. The first festival was September 17-18, 2010. The festival has grown into a major event attracting visitors from all over the world. The festival begins Friday night with a screening of the movie and performances of dances from the movie. There will dance lessons, live bands, dance performances, games, food and craft vendors. Over 4000 people are expected to converge on beautiful Lake Lure. Highlights include a Lake Lift competition.
Many people don’t realize that major parts of the Dirty Dancing movie were filmed in and around Lake Lure. The famous Lake Lift was filmed at Fire Fly Cove. The stairs and bridge where Johnny taught Baby to dance were located on Lake Lure but have since been demolished. A former boys camp was used for scenes with the cabins for the staff including Johnny(Patrick Swayze)’s cabin and ballroom scenes. The cast and crew took over the 1927 Lake Lure Inn while they were filming. This spring and summer a remake of the movie has been filmed at Lake Lure and will air on ABC. The movie is still very special to many of the local residents. If you have the opportunity to go to the Dirty Dancing Festival you will surely have “the time of your life”.
